This chapter gathers the creatures that seem to break both reason and the natural order: the giant kraken, the leviathan, the behemoth, the roc and the so-called earth-bound demons among them.
It opens with the musings of Merdan the Magician, who wonders whether such horrors are sent by angry gods as punishment, or whether they rise out of the darkest corners of human imagination and take on real form through the fears and superstitions of men. Merdan admits he cannot tell which answer is correct, and is not even sure which he would rather believe.
